eco living
leading the way with furniture that is kind to our environment ...
Modern furniture is often full of potentially toxic synthetic chemicals, such as fire retardents and stain resistant coatings to armchair and sofa covers. The polyurethane foam used in most lounge furniture is also a petrol-derived product and the lightweight plywood and particle board used in cheap furniture usually contains formaldehyde, a possible carcinogen.
Eco friendly furniture minimises the use of chemicals by using natural materials such as wood, wicker, wool, natural latex rubber, organic cotton and hemp, natural feather filling, and avoids chemical coatings and treatments as much as possible. Alternate eco friendly materials include recycled tyres for suspension and hessian for webbing and as filler.
Eco friendly furniture should also be as long lasting, and able to be reclycled at the end of its lifetime. Any wood used should be from a sustainable resource, not from old-growth forests or tropical rainforest.
Make Your House A Home's new sofa 'the Charli' ticks all the boxes when it comes to environmentally responsible furniture without compromising on design or comfort ... every part of the manufacturing process has been carefully thought through so that the 'new' sofa's footprint is very minimal.
It is a sofa that has the bones to take on many lives as it gets handed down from generation to generation. Being a 'classic' style allows it to be dressed according to its environment, it would be equally at home in a modern or traditional setting.
eco friendly fabric ... hemp
If ever there was a fabric to deserve the title 'fabric of the future' it's Hemp!
Having few natural insect predators, hemp grows without the use of any toxic chemicals.
Hemp fabric is made from the stems of the plant. The stems are processed to dissolve the gum or pectin and to separate the fibres, which are then processed again and woven into yarns and fabric. Hemp fabric withstands water better than any other fabric.
It is naturally antibacterial for sensitive noses and skin, while being extremely durable and versatile.
It feels so soft to touch, and wears exceptionally well. It's high UV resistance and great thermal qualities make it an ideal fabric for all types of uses.
